European Federation of Road Traffic Victims to receive award from Fundacion MAPFRE: “Best Accident Prevention and Road Safety Initiative 2015”
for their project “Do not forget the seriously injured road traffic victims.”
Jeannot MERSCH, FEVR president, said: “We are very proud and honoured to be receiving this award - on Monday, 6th June, in Madrid. It will give us yet more energy and motivation to go on with our noble task of highlighting road danger issues from the road victims’ perspective and of ensuring that the voices of those victims are heard and their needs met – in our countries, in Europe and globally.” more
During many years only people who had been killed in crashes were regarded as road traffic victims, while those who were injured, even seriously, were completely ignored and forgotten. FEVR is therefore campaigning to have also injured road traffic victims considered as a serious and important public health problem.
Most injured road crash victims are young, but their injuries mean that they are not able to work or study anymore. Manuel RAMOS, FEVR vice-president, said: “If seriously injured road traffic victims will know that they are not forgotten, this could help them overcome better the many difficulties they encounter in their daily social and professional lives.”
As in respect of road traffic crashes reductions in serious injuries lag behind reductions in deaths, we esed to highlight that much more needs to be done to recognize, prevent and reduce also these enormous global health losses.
Donna PRICE, FEVR vice-president, said: “This wonderful award will allow us to re-focus our combined efforts in preventing and alleviating this needless human pain and suffering, which is totally avoidable and which continues to affect too many of our families.”
Brigitte Chaudhry, former FEVR president, said:”It is quite shocking that after 25 years of dedicated campaigning on behalf of bereaved and injured road crash victims, they should still be faced with many of the same problems victims encountered at the time FEVR and many of its member organisations were set up. We are therefore happy about the recognition by Fundacion MAPFRE.”
